{"id":19732,"date":"2017-08-25T19:45:26","date_gmt":"2017-08-25T23:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unclerickaudios.com\/?p=19732"},"modified":"2017-08-25T19:45:26","modified_gmt":"2017-08-25T23:45:26","slug":"stonewalls-grave-and-other-interesting-things-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/2017\/08\/25\/stonewalls-grave-and-other-interesting-things-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Stonewall&#8217;s Grave and Other Interesting Things"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On July 29th of this year, Mrs. Marilyn and I celebrated our 44th\u00a0wedding anniversary.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\">Well, we didn&#8217;t exactly celebrate it on the very day.\u00a0 But a couple of days later we took off on a very special trip to the little town of Lexington, Virginia.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\">Lexington is an old town with a lot of history.\u00a0 It was founded during the War of Independence and in fact was named after Lexington, Massachusetts, where the first shots of the war were fired by the Minute Men.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lex1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19716\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lex1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">Though it&#8217;s a very small town, Lexington has much to offer visitors. Lee.\u00a0\u00a0<a Club has a book about his life also.<\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">After the South lost the war, General Lee received many offers of jobs.\u00a0 He had to have a way of earning a living now that there was no more Confederate army, but none of the job offers seemed to be right for him.\u00a0 After several months, he received a letter from the board of Washington College in Lexington.\u00a0 They wanted him to come and be the President of the college.\u00a0 Seeing a chance to help train leadership for the rebuilding of the South after the ravages of war, General Lee and his wife accepted the offer and moved to Lexington.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">The General only lived five years after he began his work at Washington College.\u00a0 During this time, he was admired throughout the South and the North as well because of his achievements in war and peace, and especially because of the high moral character he had always displayed.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">When he died, he was buried in the chapel he had ordered to be built on the campus.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lex5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full and I had several graves to visit in Lexington.\u00a0 Stonewall is not buried at VMI, but a few blocks away in Stonewall Cemetery.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><a Sorrel, was stuffed after she died and now stands in the VMI museum.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lex9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19724\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lex9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div align=\"center\">During our cemetery visit, we also saw the graves of several other Confederate soldiers and some Revolutionary Soldiers as well.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lex10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19725\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lex10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div align=\"center\">It is a lovely place, with gravestones old and new.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">Stonewall&#8217;s grave is underneath a large statue of himself.\u00a0 By his side rest his wife, daughter, and several other family members.\u00a0 The cemetery is shaded by many pretty trees, some of them so large that we know they were there when the great General was buried.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">We toured the house in which Stonewall and his wife, Anna had lived.\u00a0 It was the only house he ever owned.\u00a0 Some of the furniture we saw was the very furniture the Jacksons had owned and used.\u00a0 You can imagine how exciting it was to walk on the very floors on which the great Stonewall once walked.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lex11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full Home<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">We couldn&#8217;t tour General Lee&#8217;s house because it is still used as the college president&#8217;s home and so it is occupied.\u00a0 Traveler&#8217;s stable is now the garage.\u00a0 Passersby on the sidewalk can see Traveler&#8217;s stall inside.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">We made the hour-and-a-half drive from our home to Lexington on Monday afternoon and drove home Tuesday afternoon.\u00a0 As we said goodbye to the quiet little town nestled among the beautiful Blue Ridge
