{"id":19958,"date":"2017-09-19T16:19:47","date_gmt":"2017-09-19T20:19:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unclerickaudios.com\/?p=19958"},"modified":"2017-09-19T16:19:47","modified_gmt":"2017-09-19T20:19:47","slug":"a-tidbit-from-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/2017\/09\/19\/a-tidbit-from-history\/","title":{"rendered":"A Tidbit from History"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">When Roger Sherman came to the Continental Congress from Connecticut, he did not present a very impressive figure.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19960  alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes2.jpg\" alt=\"Roger Sherman\" width=\"408\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes2-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">He had a thick New England accent and often gestured energetically with his hands as he spoke.\u00a0 But it wasn&#8217;t long before he earned the respect of his fellow representatives.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\n<div>This was partly because he spoke with wisdom and conviction.\u00a0 It was also because of his breadth of life experience.\u00a0That experience continued during his time in Congress<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Before he left this world he had served as a lawyer, a surveyor, a member of the Connecticut legislature, a justice of the peace, a judge of the Court of Common Pleas.\u00a0 He had also been superior court judge, treasurer of Yale College, a member of the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence, and a U. S. Senator.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>But it was by his experience in still another profession that he made a deep impression on his colleagues in the fledgling Continental Congress.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19959\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes1-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>During the war, Sherman served on a congressional committee to examine certain expenditures by the army. One of these accounts involved the purchase of shoes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Sherman declared that the army had paid far too much for the shoes. The price was entirely out of line, he said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Off the top of his head, he described the cost of leather and other materials and the amount and value of the time expended in the workmanship.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>His fellow committee members were astounded by his precise and accurate accounting of the proper price of shoes.\u00a0That&#8217;s when he informed them about his very first profession, the trade he had learned from his father&#8230;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0He had been a shoemaker!<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19961\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes3.jpg 490w, https:\/\/blog.characterconcepts.com\/unclerick\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/highpricedshoes3-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>By the way, he was a born-again believer too.
