His\u00a0most famous scientific experiment is the one in which he\u00a0proved that lightning is electricity.<\/div>\n

Ben had long suspected\u00a0that this was true.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Because he noticed that lightning\u00a0usually struck the highest parts of trees and buildings, he\u00a0wished that Philadelphia had a big hill or tall building so\u00a0he could get closer to the lightning.<\/div>\n

Finally,\u00a0it occurred to Franklin that he could get a<\/div>\n
kite high up into the air and perhaps make<\/div>\n
contact with the lightning. So one rainy day he<\/div>\n
and his son launched a kite out in a field.<\/div>\n

The kite was\u00a0not made of paper because paper would fall apart when\u00a0it got soaked with rainwater.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Instead, Franklin made the kite out of a silk<\/div>\n
handkerchief. Silk would catch the wind well enough, and it would not\u00a0fall apart when wet.<\/div>\n

Franklin and his son moved to a shed when the rain<\/div>\n
began to fall. Franklin tied a key to the kite string.<\/div>\n
He held the string\u00a0by another string made of silk that he kept dry, because he suspected\u00a0that electricity would travel down a wet string and shock him.<\/div>\n

When\u00a0he observed lighting in the sky near his kite, Ben moved his hand near\u00a0the metal key and felt a mild electrical shock.<\/div>\n

This led to his invention\u00a0of the lightning rod, which was soon saving many wooden houses from<\/div>\n
burning down after being struck by lightning.<\/div>\n

In fact, Franklin’s own\u00a0house is said to have been saved from burning by a lightning rod.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
